“Mama Africa”

Ifarinu Egunrinde

Mama Africa’s marketplace was birthed by Ifarinu Egunrinde, a Black woman from the westside of Chicago. She was inspired by the rich history of the marketplace in Africa and found herself  enamored by the vibrancy of the land. The deeply spiritual roots of the set up and the communal atmosphere of the space sparked something in her. Egunrinde saw a place to share, showcase, trade your gifts and talents. One where you can be filled and fed spiritually while also supporting yourself and your family financially. “The marketplace is the heartbeat of the people.” She says. Ifarinu first found a love for African culture after traveling there herself. After purchasing and returning home with various African handmade goods, she was shocked to find that what she bought wasn’t actually made in Africa. After a once over of her home, she realized that nothing of hers was an authentic African product. On her journey to change that, Mama Africa’s Marketplace was brought into the world!

Mama Africa’s includes both in-person and online experience. We have distribution sites across Africa. Notably in Lagos, Osun State, and our headquarters is located in Chicago,IL. At our in-person location on the south side, you will find the storefront/marketplace and the community center/temple. We also have a social media presence as well as an online e-commerce store. People can shop authentic African and Black American crafted goods both online and in store! We are your one stop shop for culture, healing, and community.

Our Mission

Mama Africa's Marketplace (MAM) strives to bring the spirit of traditional African marketplace to anyone, anywhere, across the world. With an influx of goods coming from China, India, and Thailand; The market has a huge deficit in authentic African products and services. MAM was curated to bridge the gap and make African goods and culture more accessible while providing a safe place for Black people to commune, learn, and heal. Mama Africa’s Marketplace will be a household name and “Made in Africa” will be stamped on household items around the world.

Our Vision

Mama Africa's Marketplace stands to be the vibrant heart of the community, celebrating African culture and heritage. We offer several opportunities that empower local entrepreneurs, connect people to authentic handcrafted goods, and foster a sense of unity. We want to strengthen economic vitality and utilize the Black dollar to help Black people.

Our Values

The Three C's

Community

The foundation of our existence.

We believe in the power of connection and the strength of our collective growth. Mama Africa’s serves as a gathering place for individuals from all walks of life. We encourage a spirit of cooperation, support, and mutual respect. If we uplift each other and contribute to the well-being of ourselves, we can assure that every interaction strengthens the bond that holds us together.

Culture

The heart of our practice.

We are deeply rooted in celebrating and preserving African heritage traditions while also embracing the diversity within the African diaspora. From the vendors we featured to the events we host, everything is infused with the rich history, art music, and customs that define who we are. We stand to preserve the traditions of our people and undo the damage caused by colonization and the demonization of Afro-descended practices.

Connection

The beliefs behind our work.

We recognize the importance of inner wellness and spiritual connection to our roots. Spirituality is more than a set of beliefs. It is a guiding principle that informs our actions, relationships, and the environment we cultivate. Whether through the sacred items we offer, the mindful practices we encourage, or the respect we show for the earth and its resources we seek to nurture the spirit of Afro- descendent people. It isn’t just about the products, but also healing and invoking a deeper sense of purpose in the people.

We provide intention care in our work our “M.B.S” model!

Mind

The inner head, or spiritual consciousness, which guides intuition, decision-making, and life’s purpose. It’s seen as the essence that connects individuals to their destiny.

In Yoruba, we call this “Ori”

Body

The physical form, which interacts with the material world and carries out actions. It is cared for through balance and respect for natural rhythms.

In Yoruba, we say “Ara”.

Spirit

The breath of life, a divine energy given by Olodumare (the Creator). It is the source of vitality and connects individuals to both ancestors and the spiritual realm.

In Yoruba, we say “Emi”.
